A Visit home

Alex didn’t go very far from Amanda. In fact, every time she tried to get up, Alex was right there, licking and cleaning to the point where Amanda couldn’t get up!

“Mew, mew” [I want to get up]

“Meoow!” [you need to get some rest]

{A note from the narrator: All kitty talk will be automatically translated to make it easier on the human readers.}

Slowly Amanda regained her strength and was able to get up and around. Sarah played a large part in her recovery by making sure she had plenty of food and water.

“Amanda, you’re ok!!”

“Yes, the humans took me to a doctor and he took that sticky thing out of my paw. But they stuck this other sharp thing in first. I don’t know what it was, but it put me to sleep. I guess it was something so that it wouldn’t hurt me when they took that thing out of my paw.”

Gingerly Amanda tried walking. Amazingly there was no pain. She hopped out of the box and went down to see Alex. He wanted to return to their travels, but Amanda wanted to wait and say good-bye and thank you to Sara.

Although Sara wanted to pick Amanda up and give her a big hug, she knew she shouldn’t. But she reached down and petted her as Amanda rubber up against her (the kitty way of saying thank you).

Alex wanted to head out in a different direction but Amanda asked if they could go visit her mom, sisters and brothers. Even though it was a bit of backtracking, they realized they could start a new journey in a different direction from there.

“Mandy, we need to go this way. Remember we showed your mom the new food source?”

“Oh yeah, forgot. Thanks”

Amanda is a mouthful, especially for a kitty. Alex shortened it. As they were walking, they saw some of the other kitties they knew from the old neighborhood. Before long, Scratch came over and he didn’t look happy.

“Al, come here a minute. I need to talk to you privately.”

Alex’s hair started to go up. Scratch earned his name the hard way. But, he also had a feeling that Scratch had news that concerned Mandy and it wasn’t looking good.

“What’s up?”

“Uh, I’m not sure how to tell you this and you’ll have to be the one to tell the little lady. Her youngest sister, that funny colored one, got run over by one of those human powered things. I saw the whole thing. She was trying to go across the alley and ran between the two wheels but she was too slow. It went right over the top of her. She made tracks to the garbage cans to hide. She was hurting pretty bad.”

“At least she wasn’t killed. Did the human just keep going or what?”

“Actually, he stopped and tried to find her. He was crying. He wanted to help, but she was too sore to think clearly. She just wanted to go someplace to heal.”

“Where is she”

“I found mama and took her to her. You might want to prepare your friend though.”

“Ok, thanks.”

Alex broke the news to Amanda as gently as he could. That just fired her desire to find mom that much more! It didn’t take long. As soon as Mama saw the wild bunch (as she referred to Alex and Amanda), she rushed out to warn them about CeCe (some called her crazy colored, others calico colored.

“I know Mama, I heard about it. How is she?”

“She can walk, but not easily. I don’t know what else I can do.”

CeCe was alive, but she was hurting. There was only one thing to do and all it took was one look at Alex to make the decision.

“Mama, we can’t help her, but we have a human friend that can.”

Amanda then told her mom all about the adventure in the woods and the thorn. Then she tried to describe how the human’s fixed it.

“That was a Veterinarian, he’s a human doctor that takes care of animals. Do you really expect your human friends to do it again?”

“We won’t know unless we try.”

Alex agreed. With that, the wild bunch went back with mama to have a short family visit then between the two of them, they guided CeCe to Sara’s.

[next week, Sara finally gets her wish]
